Welcoming the New Year While Traveling
I welcomed the New Year in Lisbon, Portugal, and it was one of the calmest New Year experiences I have had while traveling. If you are planning to travel during New Year, Lisbon is a great option if you want a mix of celebration and quiet moments.
I spent the evening near Praça do Comércio, where locals and travelers were gathered for fireworks. It was lively but not overwhelming. Public transport ran late, and the city felt safe and well organized.
The next morning was my favorite part. Most shops opened late, streets were quiet, and it was the perfect time to explore viewpoints like Miradouro da Senhora do Monte without crowds. Cafés were open, serving fresh pastries and coffee, making it easy to start the year relaxed.
Traveling during New Year taught me to plan less and experience more. Book accommodation early, expect limited store hours on Jan 1st, and enjoy the quieter side of the city. It is a refreshing way to begin the year, especially if you prefer meaningful travel over packed parties.
